Like public speaking, possessing the platform to write requires planning. Planning on what to say, how to say it, and to whom you wish to have it directed. This first blog entry is about as far from “writer’s block” as anything could be. I want to say it all! But… Who is my audience? Who will they become? Will they grow with me, or am I to grow to them? Honestly, I want this to be the personal side of a professional. That is only because I have married my business. I love it. I love the lives I can touch because of this business marriage. Many weekends I read on a wedding program the phrase “Two Become One” and I begin to see there is truth to that. I guess it’s the pride in “who” I’ve found that makes me want to talk about it. Like a serious relationship, it takes a lifetime to acquire the character that builds the individual. It takes time to have the other half reveal who they are. I had been dating the “wedding entertainment business” for 10 years before I found Milestones. It was an evening in October 2007 when I was given wedding paperwork by a local multi-op Rapid City DJ service the night before the event. We are talking a little over a year ago and the bride’s name, her face, even the circumstances of the event for some reason no longer exist in my mind. I’m certain it was a good night for them. But that night in October, I swore off treating someone’s wedding day as a “cheap one-night stand.” These are real people, real love, and real families and friends that come together. Mass-appeal DJ companies in this area set up wedding reception entertainment as cookie-cutter delivery. And when that is fully realized by the customer, it’s the day of the wedding. Engaged couples in this area deserve better than shallow, cheap, cheesy, and most of all “canned” wedding entertainment. Generic and canned are fine for the masses. But for brides that see they want better, they didn’t have a choice. “Generic and canned” was all that was being supplied. I “courted” Milestones for about for most of 2007. I chased a degree so I could support this endeavor. But it was that October night I realized Milestones was the one. We have a business plan, marketing strategy, target market, model bride type. I have an idea of the type of events I want to be. And lastly, I know where I want to place a Milestone Event: A reputation of excellence over commonplace. Milestones and I have been married for over a year. We are still in honeymoon phase. We have our moments of ecstasy when the hugs, reviews, evaluations, and thank-you cards roll in. We also get snippy with each other over finances, too. But, I can look back on this past year and be very pleased with what we’ve attained. Our offspring are our clients – past, current and future. |
